This is a story about the exhibition “Why do humans create human-shaped objects？”.

At the end of last year, I heard from curator Nagao-san that he wanted to do an exhibition focusing on the diversity of human form itself, and that it was going to be something really interesting! I have been looking forward to this exhibition ever since I heard from Mr. Nagao Curator that he wanted to do an exhibition focusing on the diversity of the human form itself.
The exhibition will feature a wide range of items, including clay figures, haniwa (clay figurines), folk dolls from the Yokohama Doll House collection, Kokeshi dolls and other local toys, post-modern creative dolls, contemporary art, recent acrylic stands, and "human forms" drawn not only in three-dimensional form but also in two-dimensional paintings. I myself paint and make sculptures, but I have never faced the fundamental question of "why do we make human forms", so the content of the exhibition, which focuses on the differences and diversity in the way people perceive "human forms", is very interesting and I feel that it has given birth to a new perspective in me, that I can perceive it more freely.
This time, I am particularly attached to the work of the people at Yamanami Kobo, a facility for people with disabilities in Shiga Prefecture. I had seen their work on TV before and was very interested in the free production environment at Yamanami Kobo, so I was very honoured to be allowed to film there this time.

A brief description of the Yamanami Kobo is that it is a facility for people with disabilities with a current enrolment of around 90 people. The users mainly have intellectual, mental or physical disabilities, and their conditions vary widely. As the introduction says, it was a free space where everyone spent their time as they wished, completely different from the image I had imagined of a facility for people with disabilities.
Some people create works of art at a very fast pace, while others take several years to complete a piece.
However, what they all have in common is that their creative activities are integrated into their daily lives, and I got the impression that they enjoy the act of moving their hands rather than seeing what kind of work they can produce.
The staff who find the right work for each person is also a big part of this.
And above all, I was shocked at how great everyone's work was. I think everyone will be inspired by the attitude of not being told to make something, not caring about the evaluation of the finished work, but just facing their own world and continuing to work with their hands every day.

横浜にある人形専門の博物館、横浜人形の家で開催中の「ひとはなぜ ひとがた をつくるのか」展についてのお話です。

去年末にキューレーターの長尾さんから、人のフォルム（かたち・かた）そのものの多様性に着目した展示をやりたい、という話を聞いてからなにやらすごく面白そうな展示になりそう！と楽しみにしていた展示がやっと開催になりました。
土偶、埴輪、横浜人形の家収蔵の民族人形およびこけしなどの郷土玩具、近代以降の創作人形、現代アート、昨今のアクリルスタンド、そして立体だけでなく平面的な画の中に描かれる「ひとのかたち」など幅広く展示されており、私自身も絵を描いたり立体を作るのですが、この「なぜひとがたをつくるのか」という問いには向き合ったことがなかったので、人それぞれの「ひとがた」の捉え方の違いや、多様性に焦点を当てている展示内容はとても興味深く、もっと自由に捉えていいんだな、と自分の中に新しい視点が生まれた気がしています。
そして今回とくに想い入れが強いのが、滋賀県にある障がい者施設「やまなみ工房」のみなさんの作品です。以前テレビで拝見し、やまなみ工房の自由な制作環境にとても興味があったので、今回撮影に行かせていただけてとても光栄でした。

簡単に「やまなみ工房」の説明をすると、現在90名ほどが在籍する障がい者施設です。利用者の方々は主に知的や精神、身体に障害をもち、その状態は様々で、時間の使い方や落ち着く空間も多種多様、できること、できないこと、したいこと、したくないことも様々です。という紹介文の通り、私が想像していた障がい者施設のイメージとは全くかけ離れた皆が思い思いの時間を過ごす自由な空間でした。
好きな時に気の向くまま制作活動をし、気が乗らない時はベットで横になったり散歩に出かけたりと、とにかく楽しい、心地よいと感じる時にだけ制作活動を行い、ものすごいスピードでどんどん作品を生み出していく人もいれば、数年かけて1つの作品を完成させる人など様々です。
しかし皆に共通しているのはその制作活動が日常に溶け込み、どんな作品ができるかということより、手を動かす行為自体を楽しんでいる印象を受けたことです。
人によって絵を描いたり、粘土で造形を作ったり、刺繍をしたりと様々なことを行なっているのですが、一人一人に合った作業を見つけてあげるスタッフの存在も大きいと感じました。
そして何より皆さんの作品が最高すぎて衝撃でした。。誰かに言われて作ってる訳でもなく、出来上がった作品の評価を気にする訳でもなく、ただひたすら毎日自分の世界に向き合って手を動かし続ける姿勢に誰もがきっと刺激を受けると思います。
